Protecting pillars of democracy

Kiama Council

Customer Services Chambers image

Kiama Council will soon begin repairs on the Old Council Chambers on Manning Street, to protect the historic building.

The heritage-listed building, constructed in 1900, served as the chambers for council meetings until 1982.

The Chambers has developed a number of structural issues, including concrete cancer in the iconic portico columns that face Manning Street.

Council has used specialist consultants to assess the columns and building.

A list of repairs and replacements has been prepared as a result:

• Demolition and replacement of one concrete column

• Repairing the remaining concrete columns

• Strengthening the building’s timber frame

• Rectification of masonry defects on the first floor

We have contracted Murphys Group Services to carry out the work based on their extensive heritage conservation experience.

We expect the work to commence in November.
