CFA was called to the incident around 1.15pm on Alamein Road at the Defence’s Puckapunyal military base on 6 December, 2020.

It’s understood a resident on the Puckapunyal base called triple zero to report the fire which took hold of a wing of the building around 40 x 100 metres in size.

CFA Hilldene Fire Brigade Comms Officer and Incident Controller, Jake Kociancic, said firefighters did a great job stopping the spread of the fire to nearby classrooms and offices.

“There was a fantastic multi-agency response and cooperation in bringing this fire under control and saving as much of the building as we could,” he said.

The fire was brought under control by 4pm and was declared safe at 8.45pm.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage but fire investigators are on scene. The fire is not believed to be suspicious.

There were 20 CFA vehicles on scene along with support from Fire Rescue Victoria, Defence firefighters, Military Police, Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, VICSES, Local Defence Assets and Control and the Department of Education.

Alternative arrangements for the school students have been made with the Department of Education.
