Australia shot out of the blocks with a kick behind from Reece Hodge that turned the New Zealand defence around allowing Tom Wright to cut back inside and score on debut for Australia and give the Wallabies a 5-0 lead.
The All Blacks countered quickly with Rieko Ioane crossing in the corner for New Zealand, leveling the scores at 5-5.
New Zealand were stunned with a red card to prop Ofa Tuungafasi just after the first quarter of the match, when he was deemed to have hit Tom Wright high, with the shoulder, which hit the red card threshold, reducing the All Blacks to 14 men.
Australia took the lead with a penalty to Reece Hodge, moving the scoreline to 8-5. The All Blacks again countered with a penalty to Jordie Barrett after an Australian infringement, taking the score to 8-8.
Lachlan Swinton was penalised for a high shot on Sam Whitelock with referee Nic Berry showing the debutant a red card, to reduce both teams to 14 men.
Australia was put under further pressure when Marika Koroibete was given a yellow card on the cusp of the break for infringing at the breakdown which brought the men in gold to 13 men.
The second half saw the Wallabies re-take the lead with two back to back Hodge penalties bringing the Wallabies to 14 points against New Zealand’s 8.
The All Blacks found a way to counter quickly off an error from an Australian line-out, scoring a try through Codie Taylor and re-took the lead by one point (14-15).
The momentum of the second half continued to swing between the two sides however the Wallabies fought their way back into the match and an additional penalty to Reece Hodge gave the men in gold the lead with 17-15 with nine minutes to go.
The Wallabies continued to battle against the All Blacks defence and after hammering New Zealand with over 11 phases Australia scored through Taniela Tupou punching through on a pick and drive.
Hodge converted the try and gave the Wallabies take a 24-15 lead with minutes to spare.
With less than two minutes on the clock the All Blacks continued to ask questions of Australia’s line with Tupou Vaa’I crossing from close range to bring the scoreboard within two points, 24-22.
The final stages of the match saw New Zealand continue to hammer the Wallabies defence, but the men in gold held strong, turning the ball over, and ending the match with the victory, sending the ball into jubilant fans at Suncorp Stadium.
The win keeps Australia’s e-toro Tri-Nations hopes alive and continues the Wallabies recent unbeaten run in Brisbane going with seven matches in a row.
