The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) has welcomed the appointment of North Queensland-based Senator Susan McDonald as Federal Shadow Minister for Resources and Northern Australia.
QRC Chief Executive Ian Macfarlane said Senator McDonald would bring a first-hand understanding of the importance of the sector from her base in Townsville.
“Townsville is one of Queensland’s important regional resources hubs, supporting more than 3,500 local resources jobs and contributing almost $600 million to the Queensland economy, according to our latest economic contribution data [https://www.qrc.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/TownsvilleState-Electorate2021.pdf].” Mr Macfarlane said.
“Senator McDonald will bring an understanding of the value chain and supporting jobs the sector creates in regional communities right across Queensland,”
“It is essential that both the Government and the Opposition have a strong voice for the resources sector at the centre of policymaking. It is fitting that the two powerhouse resources states of Western Australia and Queensland are represented in the respective parties.
“The resources sector will continue to be essential to the Australian economy through the contribution it makes to the state and national budgets, and will continue to underwrite jobs, investment and energy security.
“Australia needs a resilient resources sector now more than ever and Queensland is playing its part in supporting new investment in vital energy sources and the new economy minerals to support national security and a modern, low-emissions economy.”
