Queensland Police Pipes and Drums band take schools on tour

Students from Glenala State High School in Inala have taken the first stage dive into ‘School Rocks’, a community engagement program delivered by Crime Prevention Programs Unit (CPPU), school-based Police Officers, and the Queensland Police Pipes & Drums band.

The initiative engages youth through pop-up performances during school lunch breaks, with band members rocking out on electric guitar, bass guitar, drum, digeridoo and/or pipes as part of a flash mob.

The Queensland Police Pipes and Drums band also collaborated with students to perform several songs for the school.

The first instalment played out last month on October 10, with the program expected to expand across schools in the Brisbane district.

Acting Senior Sergeant of Pipes and Drums Ciaron Jackson said the event was a resounding success, with the community embracing the unique blend of music and policing.

“Being able to bridge the gap between policing and the youth in such a creative way has been incredibly rewarding he said.

“The students’ musical talent was on full display, demonstrating the potential for music to bring people from different backgrounds together.

“This initiative not only created a unique and memorable experience for the students but also showcased the approachability and community-oriented nature of the QPS members and officers involved.

“Music has a unique way of connecting people, and we’re thrilled to be a part of it.”

Acting Sergeant of Crime Prevention Programs Unit Latisha Whalan knows firsthand how meaningful engagement with youths can positively impact their lives.

“Our collaboration with the Queensland Police Pipes and Drums has been a fantastic experience,” she said.

“School Rocks is a shining example of how we can create meaningful connections with the communities we serve.

“When we come together with a common purpose, extraordinary things can happen.”
