Re-homing Tasmania’s greyhounds

Elise Archer,Minister for Racing

The Hodgman majority Liberal Government is committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of Tasmania’s greyhounds whether they are racing or have been retired.

That is why we have secured and will open Tasmania’s first ever dedicated Greyhound Adoption Program re-homing facility in January 2020.

Located at Mangalore, the Tasracing operated facility will allow public access and continue the fabulous work of Tasmania’s Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) and its dedicated employees and volunteers.

Importantly, the re-homing facility will allow Tasracing to immediately increase capacity for GAP greyhounds from 23 to 54 while also providing an emergency shelter option.

I have also announced today that Tasracing, in cooperation with the Office of Racing Integrity, is finalising a new local rule that will make it compulsory for all healthy and retired greyhounds to be assessed for re-homing.

This will further commit the industry to Greyhound Australasia’s “Towards Zero Euthanasia” framework.
