Recycling glass, cans, paper, cardboard and some plastics will be made possible in Hobsons Bay’s great outdoors with a three-bin system being installed in popular parks, reserves and beaches across the city.
A total of 200 bins will be installed across 13 locations with general rubbish, mixed recycling and glass recycling bins at each location.
Mayor of Hobsons Bay Cr Peter Hemphill said the introduction of mixed and glass recycling bins in open spaces is part of Council’s broader Waste and Litter Management Strategy 2025.
“The Waste and Litter Management Strategy focuses on avoiding, reusing and recycling waste and litter, and the recovery of resources, rather than sending waste to landfill,” said Cr Hemphill.
“Through recycling when we are out and about, we can reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, repurpose and remake new products, and pass on the associated savings to the community.”
The majority of waste collected in open spaces is from drinking beverages such as cans and plastic and glass bottles. When recycled correctly, plastic items can be repurposed and re-made into new products such as bottles, plastic bollards, pallets, fence or barrier railing and casing around electric cabling.
Other items that can be recycled in the mixed recycling include aluminium packaging, paper and magazines. Glass bottles and glass jars can be recycled in the purple glass recycling bin.
Separating glass from other recyclable materials avoids broken glass getting stuck in paper, cardboard and plastic and ensures glass can be recycled to its highest possible value.
To reduce contamination, food waste, polystyrene food storage, soft plastic such as plastic bags, coffee cups and lids, need to go in the general waste bin.
The three-bin system will initially be rolled out in the following locations:

- Altona Boat Ramp
- WG Cresser Reserve
- Altona Foreshore
- Williamstown Beach
- Fearon Reserve
- Williamstown Botanic Gardens
- Point Gellibrand Reserve
- Newport Lakes
- Greenwich Reserve
- Logan Reserve
- AB Shaw Reserve
- 100 steps
Stage 2 of the bin rollout program will be installing bins in retail centres.
The three-bin system builds on Council’s work upgrading bin capacities and increasing bin collection frequency. It also provides visitors to Hobsons Bay the opportunity to recycle glass effectively.
By 2030, the Victorian Government requires all councils to move to a four-bin system for at home kerbside recycling.
