The Australian Government is delivering on its election commitment of delivering a network of 20 headspace outreach services in regional and remote communities with a more than $27 million investment.
This major investment in headspace outreach services will deliver real change through earlier intervention and improved mental health support for young people living in regional Australia.
Spanning from Derby in WA to Norfolk Island, these services will be brought closer to where young people live and the outreach network will help break down barriers such as distance, travel time and cost, making it easier to access support when needed most.
With young people in regional and remote Australia often facing unique challenges associated with isolation and limited access to services, this can contribute to higher rates of psychological distress, self-harm and suicide.
Today’s announcement will help create 60 new jobs and marks the next phase of the Australian Government’s $200 million investment to expand headspace services.
There are currently 175 headspace services nationally, including 94 in regional Australia, with the network expected to grow to more than 200 services by 2028-29.
For young people who prefer online or phone support, eheadspace provides free telephone and web-based services for Australians aged 12 to 25 years. Further information is available at www.headspace.org.au or by calling 1800 650 890.
