A teenager has been charged after allegedly causing more than $250,000 worth of damage to a department store in Sydney’s inner west earlier this week.
About 8am on Tuesday (7 July 2026), officers attached to Burwood Police Area Command were called to a shopping centre on Burwood Road, Burwood, following reports of flooding inside a department store.
Upon arrival, police were told at approximately 7.45pm on Monday (6 July 2026), five unknown people allegedly gained access to the shopping centre before turning on the water supply from a fire hose nearby.
The department store sustained significant water damage, with total cost of the damage estimated to be more than $256,000.
A crime scene was established and an investigation into the incident commenced.
Following inquiries, about 6pm on Tuesday (7 July 2026), a 15-year-old boy was arrested on Wilga Street, Burwood, and taken to Burwood Police Station.
The 15-year-old was charged with destroy or damage property greater than $15,000 and an outstanding warrant for a driving-related offence.
He has been refused bail to appear before a Children’s Court today (Wednesday 8 July 2026).
Investigations are ongoing.
