A nurse has been charged after allegedly assaulting an elderly patient and attempting to suffocate him with a pillow at a South Western Sydney hospital yesterday.
Officers from Bankstown Police Area Command were contacted following reports a registered nurse had assaulted a patient while on nightshift at a hospital on Eldridge Rd, Bankstown, yesterday (Thursday 25 June 2020).
Local detectives attended a short time later and commenced an investigation, during which a number of items were seized for forensic examination.
Following inquiries, police arrested a 50-year-old man when he arrived at the hospital about 4pm.
He was taken to Bankstown Police Station, where he was charged with attempt to strangle/suffocate with intent to murder, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Police will allege in court that the man pushed a pillow into the face of an 80-year-old man and forcibly held him down before another a staff member intervened.
He was refused bail to appear before Bankstown Local Court today (Friday 26 June 2020).
The patient also suffered a cut to his arm during the incident, which has been treated, and his health is continuing to be monitored.
