Response to CCYP Own Motion Investigation

Roger Jaensch, Minister for Education, Children and Youth

The Tasmanian Government notes the Commissioner for Children and Young People’s report into the case management of children in the Out of Home Care System.

Firstly, I want to thank our OOHC and Child Safety Staff who do a tremendous job in extremely challenging circumstances. For many children and young people in our care, our staff offer the safe and stable relationship that they have been denied, and they provide support, care and opportunities to Children who have had a difficult start to life. The work they do is extraordinary, it is vitally important, and I thank them for their service.

The Commissioner makes a number of recommendations in her report which relate to enabling our children and young people to participate in decision making, reforming our case management model and continuing our efforts to recruit staff.

The Commissioner’s recommendations largely align with the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry relating to the Out of Home Care system, which the government has committed to implementing.

We will work through the 7 recommendations in the context of the Commission of Inquiry response and they will inform the reforms we are progressing in our Out of Home Care sector.

More specifically, the Government is committed to developing and implementing evidence-based practice models that ensure all our children are safe; their individuals needs are met and they are provided with opportunities to establish safe and stable relationships.
