Residents will have an opportunity to refresh their wardrobes, repair treasured belongings and reduce waste at Bayside Council’s Reuse & Repair Day on Saturday 12 September at Eastlakes Community Hall.
Held in support of Oxfam’s Secondhand September campaign, the event encourages the community to extend the life of everyday items through swapping, repairing and reusing rather than sending them to landfill.
Visitors can take part in a clothing swap by bringing up to six high-quality garments they no longer wear and exchanging them for something new to love. All items will be assessed on arrival to ensure they are clean, in excellent condition and suitable for swapping.
The event will also feature a clothes mending station where participants can bring clothing and textile items requiring simple repairs, such as fixing holes and tears, sewing on buttons or hemming garments.
As well as having items repaired, residents will have the opportunity to learn practical repair skills from experienced facilitators and try repairing their own items with expert guidance. Repairs carried out by facilitators will depend on demand and event capacity.
The Bower’s skilled repairers will also be available to help revive small electrical appliances and pieces of furniture.
Families are encouraged to bring along children’s toys, games and books in good, clean and working condition to swap for other pre-loved items. All items will be checked to ensure they meet safety and quality standards before being accepted.
