Townsville City Council will undertake maintenance at The Strand’s Rockpool this week, with the popular facility closed from Wednesday through to Friday (29-31 July).
The works include repairs to the pebblecrete floor surface and edges, and filling of cracks within the Rockpool.
Mayor Nick Dametto said maintaining the iconic asset was an important part of Council’s Back to Basics approach, prioritising the facilities the community uses every day.
“The Strand Rockpool has been part of Townsville’s story for nearly 60 years and remains one of the city’s most iconic recreational destinations,” Cr Dametto said.
“These maintenance works fall under the umbrella of our Back to Basics focus and are important in ensuring our infrastructure remains safe and functional for swimmers.
“However, when it comes to the Rockpool, we’re also planning for how this space can best serve Townsville for years to come.”
Cr Dametto said more than 1,500 people had shared their views on the future of the Rockpool through public consultation.
“We heard loud and clear that the Rockpool is much more than a place to swim – it’s a valued public space where families want to come together and enjoy our beautiful North Queensland weather and lifestyle,” Cr Dametto said.
“Council has taken that feedback on board and engaged specialist consultants to develop a preliminary design that reflects the community’s collective vision.
“Delivery of that design work is imminent, and we’re hopeful the next stage of community consultation will take place in September.”
Division 3 Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the maintenance carried out on the Rockpool would ensure the community asset, which has been cherished by generations of Townsville residents, remains in good shape.
“The Strand Rockpool is a defining feature of our foreshore and a place where so many local memories have been made,” Cr Greaney said.
“These repairs will address routine wear and tear and ensure the facility can continue to be enjoyed by residents and visitors while Council progresses planning and community consultation on its long-term future.”
The Strand Rockpool will be temporarily closed for the duration of the works and is expected to reopen on Saturday (01 August).
