Locals Trina and Shayne are just two members of the team at Lithgow Hospital whose careers have benefited from working in a rural health facility.

Taking advantage of opportunities to move from entry-level positions to more varied and senior roles, Shayne and Trina have both discovered fresh challenges and new skills while making rewarding contributions to their local community.

“I love my job,” says Trina, who started work in the hospital kitchen, moved into cleaning and patient services, and is growing her skills yet again as Lithgow Hospital’s recently appointed Health and Security Assistant.

“It’s not just a matter of providing security, there’s a lot of work with patients and you have to be multiskilled,” Trina explains.

“Because it’s a relatively small hospital, everyone knows each other on a first-name basis. There’s a lot of support here for anyone who needs it,” adds Trina.

Trina’s manager Shayne shares a similar story, having started at the hospital as a casual cleaner, later becoming a wardsperson, and after a stint as the Health and Security Assistant was then recruited into his current role as Patient Services Manager.

“Lithgow is a small, semi-rural community. It’s a great place to live and work, and it’s very close knit,” says Shayne.

“The multidisciplinary teams here are really well integrated, perhaps more so than at larger facilities, so there are always plenty of opportunities for new experiences and heaps of room to grow. It’s very rewarding.”

Lithgow Hospital is part of the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District, and all current vacancies are listed on the I Work for NSW website.
