The City of Ryde community is invited to join in the festivities at Council’s Lunar New Year Festival on Saturday 17 February at Eastwood Oval, from 4.00-9.00pm.
We’re welcoming the year of the dragon with a fun-filled afternoon and evening of activities featuring cultural performances, a high pole lion dance, a dragon dance, and the thrilling Excite Stunt Show, with a spectacular display of fireworks to close out the night.
The dragon is the most auspicious – and, in fact, the only fictitious – animal in the 12-year cycle of Chinese zodiac signs.
People born during the year of the dragon are said to be powerful, endlessly energetic, full of vitality, goal-oriented yet idealistic and romantic, and visionary leaders.
Lucky numbers for people born in the Year of the Dragon are 1, 6 and 7. Years of the Dragon include 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, and 2024.
City of Ryde Mayor Clr Sarkis Yedelian OAM said he was looking forward to seeing the community gather for this much-loved annual event.
“I can’t wait to celebrate Lunar New Year with everyone at multicultural Eastwood,” he said. “This is a fantastic celebration that has been embraced by our wonderfully diverse and inclusive community.
“There’s going to be lots of fun for all ages, from amusement rides to games, face painting, calligraphy, market stalls and food trucks.
“And please make sure you visit our brilliant lantern displays when the sun goes down – you can see one on the trellis in Eastwood Plaza and we also have the ‘Lanterns Light Up Korea Town’ on Rowe Street East which is supported by the Commonwealth through the Australia-Korea Foundation, part of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.”
