Mornington Peninsula Shire is beginning the Napier Street Plaza redevelopment as part of the Rye Township Plan.

The Rye Township Plan sets the strategic vision and direction for the improvement of the foreshore, streetscape and town centre of Rye.

The $6.5 million stage one rollout of the Plan is funded through a $3.25 million state government’s Growing Suburbs Fund and a matching $3.25 million contribution from Council.

As part of this vision, the Shire will be expanding on the existing Napier Street Plaza and creating the space as the main ‘heart’ of the township.

The new and improved Napier Street Plaza will be transformed into a vibrant public space and main pedestrian promenade, suitable for events and markets.

One end of the Plaza will become a shared zone for pedestrians, while wide enough to accommodate through traffic on Campbell Lane.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Sam Hearn said “the Rye Township Plan is a great example of Council investing into our townships. This Plan’s purpose is to renew Rye while protecting its culture and history.”

Nepean Ward Councillor Bryan Payne said “this exciting first stage of the Rye Township Plan will transform Napier Street Plaza into the township’s main pedestrian promenade and help connect Rye’s community facilities with the foreshore. This is just one of many projects taking place as part of Council’s Rye Township Plan over the next three years”.

Nepean Ward Councillor Hugh Fraser said “the Napier Street Plaza redevelopment will provide Rye residents with a new place to meet, socialise and rest in the heart of our township. The Rye Township Plan will revitalise Rye and build on its considerable natural assets, including ‘in-depth’ township grid, new strong north south Pier-Napier Street axis, primary school, community facilities, retail and the superb north facing beach and foreshore”.

The Rye Township Plan has been developed closely with the Rye community, Rye Beach Business Association, Rye Community Alliance and Rye Community Groups and Clubs.

Napier Street Plaza works will be completed in two stages to avoid disruption during the busy tourist season. The first stage will take place between July and December 2020 and then further works will be undertaken from April 2021 to June 2021.
