South Australia Police are disappointed with the large number of drivers who have been fined for committing distraction based offences during a five day state-wide traffic operation.
Operation Fatal Distraction was conducted across seven local services areas and four districts from Monday 5 August to Friday 9 August 2019.
The road safety enforcement campaign focused on behaviours and offences that contribute to distraction, including mobile phone use and other personal electronic devices.
Officer in Charge of the Road Safety Branch, Superintendent Robert Gray, has expressed his concern towards the high number of expiations during the operation.
“These large numbers are the reason why we conduct the operations, because people still aren’t getting the road safety message,” Superintendent Robert Gray said.
“Distraction is one of the biggest killers of South Australian drivers, and these results are incredibly disappointing to read.
“There are now 74 South Australians who have died on our roads so far this year and yet there is clearly still a section of our motoring community who aren’t listening to our messages.
“If your focus isn’t 100% on the road while driving then you’re not only being irresponsible, but you’re being incredibly selfish. Taking your eyes off the road, even for a split second, is a potentially fatal decision.
“Operation Fatal Distraction has concluded, but I assure you we will continue to target those who are doing the wrong thing so we can work towards safe, fatal free roads in South Australia.”
