Construction has begun on the $9.2 million upgrade of Hamilton Secondary College, as the Marshall Government’s $1.3 billion education build continues to take off.
The upgrade, which is expected to create 22 new jobs, includes the construction of only the second permanent planetarium in South Australia, helping the school to continue to develop as a leading player in the space education field and build on its strong STEM focus.
There are 53 schools under construction in South Australia.
Premier Steven Marshall said the Government’s massive education build was creating crucial jobs across the state.
“It is fantastic to see another major school upgrade underway as part of this massive $1.3 billion education build, which is delivering thousands of crucial jobs for South Australia,” said Premier Marshall.
“We are building what matters to South Australians and, with more than 100 school building projects set to be delivered in the coming years, we are providing a solid pipeline of construction jobs into the future, at a time when our state needs it the most.
“Hamilton Secondary College has been a leader in space education for quite some time, and the construction of their new planetarium is set to further cement the school’s status as a leader in STEM and will hopefully inspire more young people to pursue a career in the space industry.”
Hamilton Secondary College will also receive a new performing arts centre featuring a 152 seat theatre, two music classrooms and music practice rooms, major refurbishment of the existing music and drama building to create flexible learning areas, refurbishment of the resource centre, air conditioning and acoustic upgrades for one of the school’s buildings, heating and insulation in the gymnasium and upgrades to the school’s frontage facing Marion Road.
Education Minister John Gardner said it was an exciting time for the school’s community.
“I am sure that many local families will be excited to watch these concept plans come to life,” said Minister Gardner.
“Hamilton Secondary College is known as a leader in space and STEM education and this development will enhance that reputation, while also delivering world class facilities including a brand new performing arts centre and more learning areas.
“With shovels in the ground on so many school building projects across the state, our $1.3 billion education build is meeting a range of critical needs across our education system while providing a massive jobs boost for South Australia.”
