The drive to work through Adelaide’s infamous Scotty’s Corner was safer, smoother and quicker for thousands of motorists this morning thanks to yet another congestion-busting upgrade by the Morrison and Marshall Liberal Governments.
The speed limit has been lifted back up to 60km/h following $19 million worth of works at the Main North Road and Nottage Terrace intersection including the installation of dual right-turn lanes.
The project also included widening sections of Main North Road and Nottage Terrace, a new northbound priority bus lane, upgraded pedestrian crossings and an extension of the existing northbound bicycle lane.
“The Marshall Government, together with the Morrison Government, is delivering on its priority to bust congestion at key intersections like this one, making our road network more efficient and safer for everyone,” Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Corey Wingard said.
“Motorists have long been frustrated by the inadequate capacity of the old single right-turn lane from Main North Road into Nottage Terrace, which has caused long delays during peak traffic.
“The old intersection was unsafe, with 31 crashes reported in the past five years and approximately 65 per cent of those being rear-enders.
“But the 67,000 motorists who use this popular intersection each day can now celebrate as the full intersection is open to traffic with the 60km/h speed limit reinstated.
“Less congestion means a faster commute, which means getting home to your families more safely and quickly.”
Federal Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, said the upgrade is one of many important infrastructure projects being funded under the Morrison Government’s Urban Congestion Fund.
“The Morrison Government is getting on with delivering infrastructure projects that improve congestion and safety for commuters across Australia, making it easier for them to move around our capital cities and ensuring they get home quickly and safely,” Minister Fletcher said.
“Under the Urban Congestion Fund, we are delivering 182 packages of work nationwide. The total number of projects that are now completed or underway nationwide is 75. A further 22 are expected to start construction this year.
“This is just the latest example of us delivering on our commitment to progress critical infrastructure projects across the country under our record $110 billion, 10-year infrastructure investment pipeline, which is helping to drive Australia’s economic recovery.”
Member for Adelaide Rachel Sanderson said her community overwhelmingly supported the Scotty’s Corner upgrade.
“The Scotty’s Corner upgrade is a huge win for local commuters in and out of the city,” said Minister Sanderson.
“We listened to the community and the Marshall Liberal Government delivered this project which will improve traffic flow, safety and reduce waiting times getting people home faster.”
Some minor works such as coloured line marking for cycle and bus priority lanes will be finished before the project is officially completed in December 2021.
These works will require intermittent lane closures and speed restrictions. We thank all road users for their patience while these works are being completed.
The Main North Road and Nottage Terrace Intersection Upgrade has been jointly funded (50:50) by the Morrison and Marshall Governments and has supported 15 full time equivalent jobs per year during construction.
The $6 million upgrade of Nottage Terrace and North East Road intersection jointly funded (50:50) by the Morrison and Marshall governments has also been announced which will include the installation of dual left turn lanes from Nottage Terrace to North East Road.
Works on this upgrade are expected to commence in early 2022.
