Santa’s Boulevard cancelled due to bad weather

The NF McDonnell & Sons Santa’s Boulevard event will not go ahead as planned tonight, Saturday 28 November 2020 due to forecast weather conditions this evening.

“We are expecting rain this afternoon and evening, so we are very disappointed to have to cancel the event tonight,” City of Mount Gambier Community Events Team Leader Denise Richardson said.

“With all the electronic equipment required for lighting and sound at the event, rain is a safety issue. The floats are also not designed to withstand rain as they are usually only out on display for a few hours during the usual Christmas parade down Commercial Street.”

More than 800 cars streamed through the Blue Lake Sports Park last night to see the static Christmas spectacle which included 15 floats, twinkling lights, decorations and Christmas music.

The positive feedback we received after the first night has been amazing, and we thank the community for coming out to see Santa’s Boulevard.

The floats will return to the Council works depot on Commercial Street West under police escort at 1:00pm today.

“Following the toy run today, the floats will travel from Blue Lake Sports Park down Jubilee Highway and on to Sutton Avenue before being returned to the depot,” City of Mount Gambier Acting CEO Barbara Cernovskis said.

“The community is welcome to watch the procession for a last chance look at the floats for this year, with a reminder to practise social distancing and for people to remain in their vehicles.”
