Bowel Cancer Awareness Month

June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month – a Bowel Cancer Australia initiative raising awareness of Australia’s second deadliest cancer and funds for the leading community-funded charity dedicated to prevention, early diagnosis, research, quality treatment and the best care for everyone affected by bowel cancer.

Signs & symptoms to be aware of:

Tips to reduce your risk:

· Blood in your poo or rectal bleeding

· A recent, persistent change in bowel habit, such as looser, more diarrhea-lie poo, constipation

· A change in shape or appearance of your poo, for example, narrower poos than usual or mucus in poo

· Unexplained anaemia causing tiredness or weight loss

· Abdominal pain, especially if severe

· Participate in bowel cancer screening appropriate to individual level of risk (age, family history etc.), even during COVID-19 pandemic

· Avoid processed meats and limit red meat consumption

· Avoid weight gain and increases in waist circumference

· If you choose to drink alcohol, limit the amount

· Eat wholegrains and naturally high fibre foods

· Be physically active as part of everyday life

· Quit smoking
