Schoolies Festival 2018 – night two, South Australia

The second night of the Schoolies festival at Victor Harbor was more eventful than the first, with two people arrested for drug trafficking.

Police will allege that information was received regarding the male driver of a black ute dealing drugs. The vehicle was located by police and searched with the assistance of a drug detection dog.

Inside the ute, police found 36 tablets that are believed to be ecstasy.

Police then searched a tent at a nearby caravan park and located more tablets and capsules.

A 19-year-old Greenwith man and an 18-year-old woman from Paradise were both arrested and charged with trafficking a controlled drug.

They were both bailed to appear in the Victor Harbor Magistrates Court on 7 January 2019.

In another incident of concern to police, patrols were investigating a report of an assault within the festival area when the male suspect began fighting with another person.

When the two officers requested urgent assistance, the other patrols were hindered by media crews filming the incident. Police had to forcibly move media staff away from the area to assist in detaining the aggressive suspect.

An 18-year-old Aldinga Beach man who was attending the festival was reported for aggravated assault, and he will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date. He was also evicted from the festival and banned from further participation in the Schoolies celebrations.

Police issued 28 fines for people at the festival drinking in a dry zone. This is down from more than 50 fines issued on Friday night, showing the message that the Schoolies festival is NOT a licensed event and Warland Reserve is a declared dry-zone is getting through. Save your money and don’t be tempted to drink in the dry-zone.

Superintendent Mark Fairney, officer in charge of Hills Fleurieu Local Service Area says, “Police are very pleased that Schoolies are taking it upon themselves to report offences as serious as drug dealing, as it shows the majority of festival-goers do not want illicit drugs to be part of their weekend celebrations.”
