This week is Queensland Road Safety Week and together with Department of Transport and Main Roads, StreetSmarts, we’re committed to putting road safety first. In 2018, 245 people were killed on Queensland roads.
Did you know that in 2018, 30 people were killed on Queensland roads as a result of not wearing proper restraints (seatbelt), where restraint use was known?
A lot of science has gone into the construction and introduction of seatbelts in modern cars.
The seatbelt is one of the most simple safety devices in a vehicle and the outcomes of using it can be life-saving, by stopping you and your passengers from being thrown from the vehicle or through the windscreen in a crash.
The facts:
- All people travelling in a vehicle fitted with seatbelts must be appropriately restrained unless exempted.
- One in four vehicle occupant fatalities in 2018 were unrestrained, where restraint use was known.
And if you choose not to:
- Drivers and passengers over the age of 16 can be fined $391 and three points (each) for not wearing their seatbelt.
- Drivers can be fined $391 and three points for each and every passenger in their vehicle not wearing a seatbelt or approved child restraint, regardless of the passengers’ age.
So why wouldn’t you wear a seatbelt?
