Mornington Peninsula Shire Libraries will be celebrating National Science Week 2019 with the whole community!

Activities for all ages are planned across the week, 10 – 18 August, including a special guest appearance by NASA Scientist Dr Darlene Lim.

National Science Week is Australia’s annual opportunity to meet scientists, discuss the hot topics, practice science and celebrate its cultural and economic impact on society.

First held in 1997, National Science Week has become one of Australia’s largest festivals. Last year saw a staggering 1.2 million people participate in over 2100 events and activities!

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor David Gill said “creating a healthy, happy, inclusive and active community is an outcome we identified as part of our Council Plan 2017 – 2021. As part of this, we aim to provide a well utilised library service to help facilitate and promote culture connection and participation.”

“The interesting events planned for National Science Week at our libraries is one way we’re working towards a happy and healthy community.”

“I’m looking forward to attending and taking part in some of the activities throughout the week, in particular hearing from NASA Scientist Dr Darlene Lim,” he said.

In 2019, National Science Week events will be held right throughout Australia—from world’s first global Indigenous hackathon ‘INDIGI HACK’ to ‘Dr Dolphin’ and his bottlenose friends in Adelaide, and from marking the Moon landing in Sydney to the science queens of Kings Park in Perth—with everything including science festivals, music and comedy shows, expert panel discussions, interactive hands-on displays, open days and online activities.

On the peninsula, activities are planned at all Mornington Peninsula Shire Libraries – Somerville, Hastings, Rosebud and Mornington.

Activities are planned for all ages including:

Digging Dinosaurs, ages 5 – 12

LEGO Legends, ages 5+

Build Code Play, ages 8 – 12

Young Inventors Workshops, ages 8 – 12

Mornington Peninsula Astronomical Society, adult audience

Virtual reality Mars Tour, adult audience

Plus appearances from NASA Scientist Dr Darlene Lim and talks by Professor Peter Doherty and Dr Kimberly Riskas.

These activities plus many more throughout the week will be happening at all Mornington Peninsula Shire Libraries.
