A report of a seal crossing the road led to quick work by officers who safely returned the young seal back to the water.
Just after 1pm on Sunday, Police received information about a seal who was sighted crossing Hutt Road dangerously in Wellington.
The seal’s movements were spotted by a number of Wellingtonians.
Senior Sergeant Miriam Bentley from Wellington Police says when the seal was located near the Wellington Railway station it seemed to be trying to head back to the water, which involved crossing the road again.
Police and Department of Conservation worked together.
“With guidance from DOC our staff were able to uplift the seal and drive it to a safe place where it was released into the water,” says Senior Sergeant Bentley.
“This was collaborative problem solving which prevented any further issues for the young seal and for road users.”
Constables Taylor and Leitch didn’t hesitate to assist, transporting it to a beach for safe release.
“We were happy to help,” says Constable Taylor.
“When I joined Police 15 months ago they said to be ready for anything, so I guess this demonstrates that’s true!”
When asked about advice for the public regarding any other seals located, members of the public are asked not to attempt to intervene but to call 111 immediately for Police assistance.
