Search underway for woman missing in Tweed River

A multi-agency search is underway for a woman missing in the Tweed River.

About 8.30pm yesterday (Friday 9 February 2024), police were called to Keith Compton Drive at Tweed Heads after reports a woman was missing after entering the Tweed River.

Officers from Tweed/Byron Police District attended and were told the woman, aged in her 50s, had left a nearby hospital prior to entering the water.

A large search commenced; however, the woman was not located.

A multi-agency search has resumed this morning (Saturday 10 February 2023), with local police being assisted by the Dog Unit, Marine Area Command, SES, and surf lifesavers.

The woman is described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance, approximately 162cm tall and with a medium build.
