Rewiring Australia has strongly endorsed the Victorian State Electricity Commission’s strategy to support household electrification.
Under its strategy announced today, the SEC will support households to electrify heating, hot water and other appliances.
This will include electrification pilots in 2024, an education drive to help industry and households understand the benefits of electrification and establishing a trusted ‘one-stop shop’ to step people through the switch.
“Research shows that electrifying households with commercially available technologies is the fastest and cheapest way to decarbonise the economy,” said Dan Cass, Executive Director of Rewiring Australia.
“We strongly endorse the SEC’s commitment to electrification, starting with pilots which provide proof of concept and help the community understand the benefits.
“The Victoria Government is already a world leader in supporting electrification and providing trusted information to consumers. The SEC will help make the transition process even easier.”
The SEC states that an average detached house can save $2,740 on its annual power bill by going electric.
“When households install solar and a battery and then replace gas fired heating, water, cooktops and petrol or diesel cars for modern electrified alternatives, they not only reduce carbon emissions but also permanently save thousands of dollars from their annual energy bills,” said Mr Cass.
“The world already has the technology to remove fossil fuels from households and the Australian people have the highest uptake of rooftop solar in the world.
“Now we just need to make this technology more widespread and the SEC will certainly help.”
