Education Minister Sue Ellery and Minister for Asian Engagement Peter Tinley will today join key international education stakeholders for the latest of the McGowan Government’s Industry Engagement Consortiums.
The second International Education industry consortium provides an ideal opportunity for government and agencies to re-engage with industry leaders to discuss the progress since the first IE consortium two years ago.
Since the last international education consortium the Department of Education has developed an International Education Action Plan to support schools to grow their international education enrolments.
The Plan includes the marketing of Western Australian schools to international students, increasing the number of primary and secondary schools that offer an international student program, increasing the number of international students attending Canning College, and enabling international students to enrol at a regional school and participate in the international Homestay program.
Discussions from the first international education industry consortium also led to the development of the State’s International Education Strategy and in February this year, StudyPerth launched its International Education Action Plan, to support the International Education Strategy.
The Action Plan represents a significant step forward, setting out a comprehensive blueprint for future action, including a range of initiatives to be undertaken for each year of the Strategy from 2019 to 2025.
The State Government also recently announced it would invest an extra $4.5 million over three years to support the implementation of StudyPerth’s International Education Action Plan.
This is in addition to $2 million over five years to implement a long-term international education strategy to grow WA’s market share.
As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:
“International education and training is Australia’s third biggest export, after iron ore and coal.
“My government is committed to increase Western Australia’s market share of international students and the second consortium continues our commitment to work closer with the sector to establish WA as the leading provider of international education in the Asian region.”
As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:
“International education is a key economic driver for Western Australia with one job created for every three international students in WA’s education system.
“Increasing our international student market will benefit local students and schools, the wider community and the Western Australian economy.”
As stated by Minister for Asian Engagement Peter Tinley:
“We are in the midst of finalising an Asian Engagement Strategy that will help promote Western Australia’s education and training opportunities in the Asian region.
“New aviation routes from Japan and India could also provide international education opportunities into the future.”
