Don’t miss the opportunity to view the beautiful and important Australian artworks at Hawkesbury Regional Gallery before the major exhibition Fieldwork – landscapes west of Sydney closes on Sunday, 20 September.
Fieldwork is an Art Gallery of New South Wales touring exhibition and includes significant and seldom-seen paintings and works on paper from the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ collection by prominent artists including Lionel Lindsay, Hilda Rix Nicholas, Julian Ashton, Grace Cossington Smith, Elioth Gruner, JJ Hilder, Sydney Long, Charles Meere and Sydney Ure Smith.
If Heidelberg in Victoria was the popular rural destination for Melbourne’s plein air painters in the late 19th century, then the Hawkesbury River was the favoured locale of their Sydney counterparts.
A highlight is Gruner’s painting Spring Frost (1919). This iconic and much-loved painting is seldom taken off display from the Art Gallery NSW. Gruner was a frequent visitor to Windsor, often staying in a cottage located near the Windsor Court House. Another highlight is Sydney Long’s painting of St Albans and (1926), In the valley of the Grose by WC Piguenit (1880) and Julian Ashton’s A Waterhole on the Hawkesbury River (1885).
The Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains areas offered a landscape rich in subject matter and seasonal colour for these artists. The works capture areas such as Kurrajong, Jamison Valley, MacDonald River, Hartley, the Three Sisters, Fish River Caves and the well-known Doctors House at Windsor which was skillfully chronicled by both Sydney Ure Smith and Lionel Lindsay.
Over 1500 people have visited the Gallery to enjoy the exhibition since it opened on 18 July in COVID-Safe conditions.

Monday, Wednesday to Friday 10am-4pm
Saturday – Sunday 10am-3pm
Closed Tuesdays.
The Gallery is located at 300 George Street, Windsor, on the top level of the Deerubbin Centre.
Entry is free.
The Gallery is COVID-Safe facility:

- maximum of 90 visitors
- hand sanitiser station at entry to the Gallery
- signage displayed at the facility with COVID-19 messages
