SEEING GREEN: WHY AUSTRALIANS ARE SWAPPING WHITE INTERIORS FOR NATURE-INSPIRED HUES

The reign of beige is ending, and green is emerging as the country’s newest neutral

For years, Australian interiors have been defined by crisp whites, warm beiges and coastal-inspired palettes. The look reflected our love of natural light, open plan living and understated design. But a new colour is quietly taking over Australian homes, and one that reflects our connection to the outdoors.

According to cult-favourite Canadian modular furniture brand Cozey, which launched locally in April, green has quickly emerged as one of the most popular colour choices among Australian customers, standing out significantly compared to other global markets. From sofas and headboards to washable rugs, Australians have embraced shades like sage and cypress green, with sofas in those colours being the first to be added to cart. This comes as no surprise, as Australians are surrounded by some of the world’s most lush landscapes, from eucalyptus trees to thick rain forests to rolling green seaside hills.

“The appeal of green is that it is both timeless and versatile,” said Cozey VP of Creative Marketing Edmund Lam. “Like beige or grey, it can act as a neutral, but it also adds character, warmth and suggests a stronger connection to nature.

“We were pleasantly surprised to see the colour dominate as quickly as it did when we launched in Australia, and we’re seeing no signs of momentum slowing down any time soon.”

If you’re interested in adding a touch of green to your home, Edmund Lam shares three easy ways to embrace the trend.

1. Go all in with a statement sofa

The easiest way to embrace green is through the largest piece in the room.

A sofa in a deep sage instantly creates a focal point without being overly flashy or difficult to blend in with the rest of the home. For homeowners nervous about committing to colour, modular designs with removable covers, such as the Atmosphere 3-Seater Sofa with Rounded Arms (RRP $1,985), the new Orian Queen Sofa Bed (RRP $2,095) or the Ciello 3-Seater in Cypress Green (RRP $1,875) offer flexibility as tastes evolve over time.

2. Start small with occasional pieces

If you’re green-curious, but don’t want to go all in on a larger piece, an accent chair is a great way to go. The Mira Chair (RRP $325) offers a pop of green without taking over your space.

3. Layer natural textures with your green accents

One of the simplest ways to incorporate the woodsy trend is through styling it with other colours and textiles that naturally occur in nature.

Pairing green accents with oak and walnut pieces helps create warmth and visual depth without requiring a major investment. For example, pairing the Theodore Washable Rug in Forest Haze (from RRP $105) with the Ushi Extended Dining Set (RRP $2,155) offers a playful bit of colour that remains grounded in the wooden tones.

“We don’t see this as a passing trend,” said Lam. “It’s emerging as a new kind of neutral that delivers calm, while still providing warmth and personality to a home. Whether you go big with a green couch or add smaller accent pieces, it’s a colour that has real staying power.”
