Bayside City Council is calling for greater transparency and meaningful collaboration on the draft vision for the Suburban Rail Loop Cheltenham Precinct to ensure positive outcomes for our local community.
The Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) draft precinct vision proposes significant housing density within a 1.6km2 area around the Cheltenham station which also covers parts of Highett and Pennydale.
Feedback from the community on the draft vision gathered recently by Council emphasised concerns with the increased density, building heights and traffic among other issues.
Bayside Mayor, Councillor Fiona Stitfold said Bayside, along with Kingston City Council, is committed to working with the SRL to ensure there is meaningful collaboration with our community to achieve the best possible outcomes.
“Too many details in the draft precinct vision lack the necessary detail or rationale for Council and the community to provide meaningful feedback,” Cr Stitfold said.
“This city shaping project will have a significant impact on Bayside residents, particularly within the precinct area. Council echoes the community’s concerns on building heights, density and traffic impacts and is seeking clarity on the planning area boundaries and interface with existing low density residential housing.”
Bayside is also calling for replacement open space to address the loss of open space at Sir William Fry Reserve where the new station is to be located.
“We are calling on the Suburban Rail Loop Authority and Victorian Government to provide greater clarity on the process, governance and Council’s role within the precinct planning stage,” Cr Stitfold said.
