The Seniors Village Hub has celebrated its first birthday, with morning tea and a birthday cake to mark the occasion.
Orange Mayor Jason Hamling joined in the celebrations with more than 50 of the hub’s members, as well as staff from Orange City Council’s Community Services.
Those in attendance enjoyed listening to guest speaker Mary Brell OAM. Mary exemplifies the notion of active ageing and will talk about her experiences volunteering in Nepal with Rotary. She has guided numerous volunteer teams to Nepal and in 2018 she received an Order of Australia in recognition of her contribution.
The Seniors Village Hub was established with almost $250,000 funding from the Australian Government Department of Social Services.
It aims to increase wellness and reduce loneliness and isolation experienced by older people living in Orange, Blayney and Cabonne, and caters for residents aged 55 and over, and Indigenous residents over 50. The Seniors Village Hub’s membership has almost tripled in the past 12 months to 340 members, who enjoy a variety of activities at the centre each week, including tai chi, chair yoga, art, technology and games, as well as one-off information sessions regarding issues affecting older people.
