- State Labor Government investing a record $10.8 billion in housing since 2021, including record investments in government worker accommodation
Five new Government Regional Officer Housing (GROH) homes are now complete as part of the seven-home Olive Street Housing Project.
The development comprises seven four-bedroom, two-bathroom homes designed to accommodate families and shared living arrangements for government workers providing essential services in regional Western Australia.
Delivered in partnership with the City of Greater Geraldton, the project was supported by a $1.6 million contribution from the Cook Labor Government and will be leased by the Department of Housing and Works through the GROH Build-to-Lease Investor Program to provide housing for government workers.
Geraldton Building Services and Cabinets Pty Ltd were appointed by the City of Greater Geraldton to construct the homes, with works commencing in September 2025 and practical completion occurring progressively from July 2026.
The GROH Build-to-Lease Investor Program partners with local governments and developers to increase the supply of suitable housing for government workers in regional communities.
By providing more housing, the program helps attract and retain essential workers and supports the continued delivery of services across regional Western Australia.
The State Labor Government is investing a record $10.8 billion in housing since 2021, with the 2026-27 State Budget including an additional $419 million for GROH and other government worker accommodation.
As stated by Housing and Works Minister John Carey:
“Critical State Government workers, such as teachers and police officers, are essential to the strength and wellbeing of our State’s regional towns.
“This is a win-win partnership between the Cook Labor Government and the City of Greater Geraldton – it boosts the supply of homes for key workers, supports the continued delivery of vital government services for the Mid West community, and expands the assets of the City of Greater Geraldton.
“The State Government’s record $419 million investment in GROH will deliver more than 500 new homes for key regional workers as part of our Seven Cities vision for regional Western Australia.”
As stated by City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune:
“By increasing housing supply, these homes will help attract and retain the skilled workforce our community depends on, while creating more opportunities for local families to find a place to rent or purchase.
“I’d like to thank the State Government for its support in bringing this project to life, helping transform underutilised City-owned land into much-needed housing stock.”
“We’re proud to see this project completed and look forward to welcoming these workers and their families to our community.”
