SEVERE WINDS DAMAGE HOMES AND BUSINESSES AT LONG JETTY, NSW SES DEPLOYS MEMBERS TO ACT

NSW SES

Clean-up efforts are continuing after strong winds brought down trees, powerlines and many roofs.

Long Jetty on the NSW Central Coast was one of the worst impacted areas in the last 24 hours with 121 incidents. Across the state, NSW SES volunteers responded to 297 incidents. Strong winds, and heavy rain associated with storms also hit parts of Sydney and the NSW South Coast.

NSW SES members have also deployed to the ACT, to assist with more than 500 incidents still outstanding following severe weather on Friday.

NSW SES Wyong Unit Commander Inspector Matt Le Clercq said his team had been very busy over the last 12 hours.

“We’ve seen some significant damage – a whole roof from a factory was blown off and went two doors down the street before it hit a house,” he said.

NSW SES crews, along with NSW Fire and Rescue and Ausgrid attended the scene and were able to safely ensure the resident could exit the property.

“Fortunately, the resident was not injured, but his home is uninhabitable,” Inspector Le Clercq said.

Meanwhile, trees and roof shearing impacted two units at an aged care home in Long Jetty.

NSW SES Northen Zone Deputy Unit Commander Superintendent Peter Keegan said 17 storm teams are on the ground.

“A multi-agency response is ongoing in the central coast, with 58 incidents still being attended to,” Superintendent Keegan said.

“A number of properties have seen impacts, with 10 persons displaced due to the storms. All are being supported, with one resident requiring emergency accommodation.”

Superintendent Keegan said the cleanup would continue today, with favourable weather predicted.

“While the storms have eased, we are still in the middle of storm season, which means we can see severe weather at any time.

“It is important you prepare your properties – simple things like cleaning your gutters, trimming trees and securing loose items around your house that could become projectiles in strong winds.”
