Shade structures for sun smart playgrounds

Shade structures are being installed at two playgrounds in Armidale this week, to enhance sun protection for users.

Work is underway to construct a Colorbond shade structure above the playground at the Arboretum and is expected to be finished in the middle of next month.

The all-weather canopy will not only provide sun protection but will also allow children to play when it rains.

Council last year worked with the Armidale Dumaresq Lions Club to install a second shelter and barbecue at the popular park, which is highly utilised for social gatherings.

Council is also erecting shade sails above the Curtis Park playground on the northern side of Dumaresq Creek. Contractors are expected to start later this week to erect four-post Hypar sail above the Curtis Park Junior playground.

“This has been an opportune time to undertake these improvements, while playgrounds in NSW are closed to the public to help control the spread of COVID-19,” according to Councillor Peter Bailey, who has been a strong advocate for the project.

“As social isolation restrictions are eased, these playgrounds will be even more inviting for local families and visitors to use.”

The projects are part of Council’s ongoing program to review and update the provision of shade structure at playgrounds in the area, with an emphasis on regional playgrounds.

The current $85,000 works have been funded by Council as part of its asset renewal program, which will also replace components in other playgrounds during the next six weeks.

The program recently included construction of a fence at the Lambert Park playground to prevent children accessing the adjoining car park. Wheel stops and bay marking were also installed for vehicles in the car park.

“The provision of sun smart play areas is a priority for Council and we are constantly looking at how we can best use our available resources to maximise the availability of these spaces,” Cr Bailey said.
