Showgrounds renewal needs budget funds

  • Hobart Showgrounds Renewal Project offers recovery opportunities
  • Project will provide more than 500 new homes, hundreds of jobs
  • Liberals must commit to funding project in State Budget
  • State Budget funding to make the Hobart Showgrounds Renewal Project a reality would help address Tasmania’s housing crisis and create much-needed jobs.

Shadow Housing Minister Alison Standen said fast-tracking the project should be a budget priority to help with the state’s economic and social recovery.

“Tasmania’s housing crisis has worsened during COVID-19, with thousands of Tasmanians struggling to put a roof over their head,” Ms Standen said.

“The Hobart Showgrounds Renewal Project presents a great opportunity to help address the problem, providing 500 new homes, including affordable housing and community areas, a new exhibition venue and improved recreational spaces.

“This is exactly the type of project we need coming out of the pandemic, to really make a difference in the community and start to make real headway on the housing crisis.”

Labor Member for Clark Ella Haddad said as well as putting a roof over the heads of more than 1000 people, the Showgrounds Renewal Project would also create hundreds of jobs.

“Tasmania’s recovery requires an approach that considers all regions and all sectors of the economy,” Ms Haddad said.

“The Showgrounds Renewal Project is one of the projects identified in Labor’s COVID-19 Recovery Package that could be fast-tracked to create jobs, promote social and economic renewal and create a better and fairer Tasmania.

“With the proposal enjoying bipartisan support, I urge the government to commit to funding this exciting project in the upcoming State Budget.

“By getting this type of project off the ground, we can help Tasmania emerge from this crisis a better and fairer state.”
