Skilling our workforce as we build stronger Tasmania

Guy Barnett,Acting Minister for Skills, Training and Workforce Growth

The latest report from the National Centre for Vocational Education and Research (NCVER) shows that the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s plan to support more Tasmanians into apprenticeships and traineeships is working.

The report showed that 10,845 Tasmanians are in training as at 30 June 2021, which is up 23.4 per cent from the June quarter 2020.

This means that we have huge numbers of trainees and apprentices starting to build their careers and support growth in local industries right across the State.

In addition, the report revealed 15.4 per cent of employed workers within the trade occupations were an apprentice or trainee.

The construction industry is reaping the benefits of our targeted investments to support our economy and ensure that more Tasmanians have the opportunity to own their own home.

Construction trade numbers increased by 26 per cent or 475 people from 30 June 2020 to 30 June 2021, taking the total number of people in training in the construction sector as at the June quarter last year to 2315.

Young Tasmanians are also benefitting, with the number of Tasmanians in the 15-19 age bracket in training up by 28.9 per cent (635 additional young people).

Overall, there were almost 25 per cent more Tasmanians training for trade occupations in June 21 than the same time in 2020, which is a remarkable result and evidence of our strong economy.

The number of apprentices and trainees in training in Tasmania across all sectors increased by 39.1 per cent from 30 June 2017- 30 June 2021, with construction trades increasing by 77.2 per cent, engineering, ICT and science technicians increasing by 128.9 per cent and skilled animal and horticulture workers increasing by 90.7 per cent.

These strong results are supported by our $9 million Hi Vis Army plan, and will continue to be supported through our $98.6 million investment in TasTAFE.
