Skin of Color Clinic opens at Baylor Dermatology

Baylor Medicine Dermatology has opened the Skin of Color Clinic, housed at the Jamail Specialty Care Center. The clinic provides personalized and culturally sensitive care to patients of all ethnicities, skin tones and hair textures and will be led by Dr. Oyetewa Oyerinde, assistant professor of dermatology.

“I am excited to lead a clinic that addresses skin issues commonly found in underserved populations,” said Oyerinde. “I want people in Houston to know that there is a place where an expert will know how to care for their specific needs.”

The Skin of Color Clinic specializes in treating diseases common in patients with darker skin tones, such as hyper- or hypopigmentation, scarring and non-scarring hair loss, acne keloidalis nuchae, keloids and more. The clinic also offers cosmetic treatments for people with darker skin tones, such as chemical peels, laser hair removal and DPN, skin tag/seborrheic keratosis removal and more. In addition to providing these care options, Oyerinde is planning community outreach events for patients in the Houston area who may not know clinics like this exist.

“Dr. Oyerinde will excel as the director of the Skin of Color Clinic because of her dedication to providing personalized care for patients of all ethnicities, skin tones and hair textures,” said Dr. Ida Orengo, professor and chair of dermatology at Baylor. “The Skin of Color clinic will focus on the treatment of the diverse complexions of our patients and address the gaps in treatment while aiming to correct disparities and help ensure inclusivity in Houston healthcare.”

Oyerinde graduated from Howard University and completed her medical training at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. She then completed her residency training in dermatology at Harvard, where she served as chief resident in her final year. She specializes in pigmentary disorders and hair loss and is a social media correspondent for the American Academy of Dermatology.
