Sky Stories is about to make Brighton Park BRIGHTER

Kempsey Shire Council

Get ready for an unforgettable night and to be immersed in local Aboriginal Culture through the stars, sky and light shows.

Sky Stories is coming to South West Rocks on Saturday 29 April and promises to be an immersive experience of Dunghutti culture and stories through the stars, sky, and mesmerising lighting displays.

Kempsey Shire Council has partnered with South West Rocks Figtree Descendants Aboriginal Corporation to bring Sky Stories to South West Rocks. This event features interactive activities, dance performances, food stalls, and much more.

Paul Koch, Acting Manager of Community Development at Council said Sky Stories is sure to provide a captivating way to celebrate local Aboriginal culture.

“You’ll work your way along the path, captivated by bright, colourful lights and sculptures created by local artists and the community to bring you the beauty of local Aboriginal Culture,” said Mr Koch.

“You can expect to be wowed by mesmerising displays lit up in colours and in motion, like giant brolgas and koalas.”

“Sky Stories is going to be the Kempsey Shire’s very own mini Vivid festival, said Mr Koch.”

Nancy Pattison said South West Rocks Figtree Descendants Aboriginal Corporation has been collaborating with students across the Kempsey Shire.

“Figtree has been working with local primary and high school students to produce their own displays and installation of culture to tell stories through the stars.”

“At Sky Stories, you will see community made glow poles, sculptures and woven creations wrapped in lights and a children’s craft tent for little ones to make their own displays.”

Ms Pattison hopes the community response to Sky Stories will make it an annual community event.

“This is the first event, with the hope to produce something similar moving forward where we will engage with more groups in the community. The best thing about it, is that it is unique to our First Nations community.”
