Following the historic signing of the Papua New Guinea-Australia Mutual Defence Treaty, known as the Pukpuk Treaty on 6 October 2025, today we announce that from next month eligible Papua New Guineans will be able to apply to join the Australian Defence Force (ADF).
A program will start next year, with first applications opening for eligible Papua New Guineans from 16 November 2026. The program will start small to ensure the right processes are in place ahead of further expansion.
Australia and Papua New Guinea share a unique history, deep people-to-people ties, and a longstanding defence relationship founded on mutual respect, trust, sovereignty, and a commitment to a peaceful and prosperous Pacific region.
Today’s announcement reflects the close relationship between our nations and recognises that the security and stability of Australia and Papua New Guinea are closely connected.
Enabling Papua New Guineans to serve shoulder-to-shoulder with Australians is a tangible demonstration of our common vision for a capable, resilient and interoperable Alliance – and a peaceful Indo-Pacific where sovereignty is respected.
All applicants will be required to undergo assessment against ADF entry standards, including aptitude, education, health and fitness requirements. As Australian citizenship is a requirement of ongoing ADF service, successful Papua New Guinean recruits must apply for Australian citizenship once they become eligible to do so.
