SLOW DOWN – School Zones

Northern Territory Police are exasperated by the public’s disregard of school zone speed limits.

A speed camera van assigned to various schools across Darwin today checked around three-thousand vehicles and issued 129 infringements.

The most ignored zone was on Cavenagh Street outside St Mary’s Primary School where 69 infringements were issued out of 514 vehicles checked.

22 infringements were issued to drivers on Nightcliff Road outside the Middle School.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Hege Burns said “These statistics are damning. Drivers must do better. Just a small increase over the speed limit has a resulting increase in stopping distance and can be the difference in avoiding serious injuries to our children, their parents and carers and teachers.

“NT Police will continue to monitor these zones and hold drivers to account. Slow down in our school zones and adhere to the speed limits.”
