There’s good news for Council and the people who travel on Myocum Road with some $6.6 million to be spent on upgrading what is one of the Shire’s most important thoroughfares linking Byron Bay and Bangalow with Mullumbimby.
Byron Shire Council has been fortunate to receive two grants from the NSW Government – $3.8 million over three years for safety improvements from the Safer Roads program and $1.8 million over two years from the Restart NSW Fixing Country Roads program.
Nationals Member of the Legislative Council, Ben Franklin, said the funding provided by the NSW Government would help to improve traffic flow and safety on Myocum Road particularly for the significant number of trucks that use the road each day.
“I welcome the planned improvements which will help move freight more efficiently supporting jobs and economic growth in the local area,” Mr Franklin said.
Council has also allocated $1 million for substantial work on the road which currently carries more than 3,000 vehicles a day.
Phil Holloway, Council’s Director Infrastructure Services, said Myocum Road is used by a lot of heavy vehicles and the improvements will make the road safer for everyone.
“Our Resource Recovery Centre is accessed via Myocum Road so there is a steady stream of traffic seven days a week, including trucks, cars and trailers that are often full of rubbish.
“The road is currently narrow in many places, windy and the surface has seen better days so to learn that we have been awarded $5.6 million to upgrade this road is terrific news.
“Council is very appreciative of the funding from the NSW Government and we will now start planning and programming these important works,” Mr Holloway said.
“People can expect to see work start later this year and continue at different stages over the next three years,” he said.
