Speechie talk at library

Benalla Library

Do you have a child aged 0 to 5? Are you interested in supporting their language and literacy development? We have an exciting event coming up at Benalla Library that you won’t want to miss.

The Speechie Library Talks (SLTs) by Speech Pathology Australia (SPA) are scheduled to take place at Benalla Library from 10.30am to 11.30am on Thursday 23 November.

The primary goal of this program is to foster a connection between libraries and their communities with local speech pathologists, affectionately referred to as ‘speechies.’

This informative session is offered at no cost and is specifically crafted to support parents and caregivers in enhancing their children’s language and literacy abilities. This fantastic initiative is a result of a collaborative effort between Speech Pathology Australia and the Australian Library Information Association (ALIA).

The SLTs are specifically aimed at parents and caregivers of children aged 0 to 5 with the option to bring your children along too. During the event, the speechie will deliver a presentation that explores the vital role of speechies and libraries in the development of children’s language and literacy. They will also share practical tips and strategies that parents and caregivers can use at home to support their child’s language and literacy growth. The outline for the presentation will be provided by SPA, ensuring that participants receive expert guidance.

But that’s not all! The speechie will also provide a demonstration book reading of one of the SPA Book of the Year (BOTY) winning books for 2023. This interactive session will showcase how reading to your child can significantly enhance their language and literacy skills. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn firsthand how you can make reading a powerful tool in your child’s development.

During the event, there will be ample opportunity for participants to ask questions and engage in meaningful discussions with the speechie. SPA will be providing BOTY bookmarks and flyers, along with other informative handouts, which you can take home with you.

It’s a chance to gather valuable resources that will further support your child’s language and literacy journey.

Mark your calendars for this fantastic opportunity to learn and grow alongside your child.
