Speeding solo rider injured after crash in Hampton East

A speeding solo rider caught travelling on the wrong side of the road has been seriously injured following a crash in Hampton East this morning.

Officers first spotted the rider on Centre Dandenong Road in Cheltenham travelling at a fast rate of speed shortly after midnight.

Police lost sight of the motorcycle before it was seen by another unit travelling north on Nepean Highway approximately 110km/h in the 80km/h zone.

As police attempted to intercept the rider, at the intersection of Cummins and Patterson roads, he performed a U-turn and sped off on the wrong side of the road.

It is believed the rider may have reached speeds of up to 140km/h on Nepean Highway as he travelled south in the north bound lanes.

Police lost sight of the solo and pulled over, coordinating other units, before it was reported the rider had been involved in a collision at the intersection of Nepean Highway and South Road.

Following a search of the area police found the man, about 500m away in a small laneway off Keiller Street in Hampton East, where he was sitting down having a cigarette.

The 28-year-old man from Mentone was treated at the scene and taken to hospital under police guard. It is believed he suffered serious injuries during the collision.

The male driver of the other car wasn’t injured.

It is expected the man will be interviewed in relation to serious traffic related offences.
