Sport equipment scheme to help at-risk kids in Kimberley and Pilbara

  • State Government supports project to contribute donated sports gear to help at-risk children
  • Project to be run by Fair Game Australia in partnership with local community organisations, agencies and local government authorities
  • The State Government will help fund a scheme to provide second-hand sporting equipment for at-risk children and youth in underserviced communities in the Kimberley and Pilbara.

The funding will help in the delivery of the donated equipment which will aim to keep children fit and healthy while in social isolation.

Fair Game Australia will distribute the equipment and provide associated print and digital resources.

The main aim of the initiative is to help young people be physically active – while complying to social distancing measures – during the restrictions in place relating to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The State Government has contributed $10,000 to the program which will be run in partnership with local community organisations, agencies and local government authorities.

As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray:

“An investment in sport is an investment in health. Physical activity is critical for mental and physical health, and this project run by Fair Game Australia will encourage kids to exercise.

“This type of initiative is crucial for the wellbeing of remote communities in the Kimberley and Pilbara and throughout Western Australia.”

As stated by Fair Game CEO Nicki Bardwell:

“At Fair Game, we believe in using sport to help communities stay fit and healthy. This is more important than ever in times of social isolation.

“By providing sporting equipment and resources, young people in remote communities will have greater access to physical, mental and social activities which will benefit them and their families.

“This will in turn help reduce anti-social behaviour by providing a positive outlet for at-risk young people.”
