Statement – Brimbank Council response re EPA’s approval on EMP for Cleanaway site at Ravenhall

“Brimbank Council is extremely disappointed with the EPA’s decision to approve an Environment Management Plan (EMP) for Cleanaway’s Spoil Management and Reuse Facility adjacent to Ravenhall.

“This is the third EMP EPA has approved for this project. While EPA does not expect there to be further applications, the approval of an EMP does not mark the final decision on where the spoil will be sent and Brimbank Council will continue to vehemently oppose this decision.

“We will continue our fight to advocate in relation to Cleanaway’s proposal to transport, process and store contaminated soil from the Westgate Tunnel Project at Melbourne Regional Landfill in Ravenhall.

“Melbourne’s west, particularly Brimbank, has long borne the brunt of absorbing the state’s waste, contamination, pollution, landfill and traffic needs.

“This wouldn’t happen in the East, so why is it okay for the West to be treated differently?

“Continuing to consider Ravenhall as a potential site to receive contaminated soil from the Westgate Tunnel Project, will undermine Council’s and the community’s efforts, to help restore environmental equity for our region as we work to improve health, wellbeing and socio-economic outcomes in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, through the Melbourne Airport Rail, Western Rail Plan, Sunshine Super Transport Hub and Sunshine Priority Precinct Projects.”
