I was saddened to hear of the passing of preeminent Australian author and journalist, Frank Moorhouse AM, on Sunday at the age of 83.
We remember Frank for his extraordinary career, and for his immense contribution to Australian literature over many decades.
I consider Frank a pioneer for the diversity we see today in Australian literature. His masterful ability to take readers on a journey through alluring and intriguing stories underpinned his literary success, and his immense popularity at home and abroad.
Frank’s exciting talent was recognised through many esteemed awards and honours. This included the prestigious Australian literary prizes, and both the Member of the Order of Australia and the Centenary Medal in recognition of his services to literature and to Australian society through writing.
I commend his work with the Copyright Agency, the Australian Society of Authors, the Australian Press Council, the Australian Journalists’ Association and his advocacy for writers.
I also acknowledge his significant contribution to literature as a teacher and mentor, where he inspired dozens of writers to pursue dynamic stories that needed to be told.
We have lost a wonderful and creative Australian, and I send my deepest condolences to his family and friends during this very difficult time.
