Public toilets in Brighton and Hampton are on track to receive a colourful makeover, compliments of a Victorian Government COVID recovery grant.
In Brighton, Jason Parker, the senior mural street artist, worked with conservation locals, Pauline Reynolds, and Sue Forster, to identify indigenous flora and fauna species to feature on the exterior walls of toilets in Dendy Park.
Over in Hampton, the whimsical and boldly coloured seaside theme will brighten the toilet in Willis Street. Artist Daiana Ingleton was inspired by the community feedback which showed a strong preference for referencing the beautiful beaches in Hampton. Work will begin on the murals on the toilets in Dendy Park and Hampton on Monday 9 August. At critical times of the mural painting, the toilets will need to be closed for short periods. In Dendy Park, only one toilet will be closed at any one time and at Hampton, the nearest alternative public toilet is on Thomas Street near the corner of Hampton Street.
These are the first of many public assets to be painted as part of the Graffiti removal and street art project. Street art murals are proven to discourage graffiti and is part of Council’s integrated strategy to tackle the issue.
