NSW’s largest youth-focused program, Scouts NSW, has received a major $7.75 million boost from the NSW Government’s COVID-19 stimulus program.
From Moree to Bega, and Auburn to Dubbo, the funding will support upgrades to facilities at 74 Scout sites located on Crown land across NSW.
“Scouts NSW is one of our State’s largest and most popular youth organisations which helps build leadership skills, resilience and friendship in young people, so it’s great to support them,” Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes said.
“Scouting has been operating in Australia since 1908 and this support will help ensure a range of Scouts NSW facilities are in good shape.”
Minister for Water, Property and Housing Melinda Pavey said: “This funding will help Scouts NSW bounce back from COVID with improvements to facilities throughout the State, many of which are also used by other community organisations.
“Upgrade work will support local economies with work for tradies and material suppliers.”
Scouts NSW Chief Commissioner Neville Tomkins OAM welcomed the funding support.
“We are delighted with the NSW Government support that will assist an enormous number of communities,” Mr Tomkins said.
“There are many Scout roofs that need repair, kitchen and toilet blocks that require upgrading, and facilities and campsites that we want to make more accessible including for those in wheelchairs, so this funding is vital.”
During COVID-19 restrictions, Scouts NSW has moved its activities online, altering programs to ensure its 18,000 members continue to stay connected and enjoy Scouting activities.
