A strategy to mitigate fire risks, manage fuel loads and improve coordination with emergency services agencies has been endorsed by Council.
With the State battling one of the worst starts to the annual bushfire season, the timing of the Cairns Regional Council Fire Strategy could hardly come at a better time.
Potential impacts from bushfires under severe weather conditions across the Council area are considered in the Strategy, with an aim to identify hazards, reduce risks, coordinate actions, and invoke appropriate responses.
One of the main goals of the strategy is to reduce the need for controlled burns by eradicating weeds, planting native tree species, and constructing fire breaks to protect urban areas.
The Strategy looks at Council land ownership/control responsibilities with regard to fire risk mitigation, and facilitates a holistic approach to planning, communication and actions between relevant agencies.
The strategy was developed by Cairns Regional Council with input from stakeholders from the Cairns and District Fire Management Committee, which includes Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, Ergon Energy, Queensland Rail, Department of Transport and Main Roads, Rural Fire Brigades and Canegrowers.
